The summer sun is the harshest sun of the year and poses significant risks to your skin’s health and appearance, but why?

The summer sun is especially harmful to your skin because it has the strongest UV radiation of the entire year. When it comes to UV rays, there are two critical types you need to know: UVA and UVB.

UVB is absorbed by your skin’s outer layers, leading to sunburns and contributing significantly to the risk of skin cancer. UVA penetrates deeper and breaks down collagen and elastin, which accelerates your skin’s aging.

Higher summer temperatures also cause your blood vessels to dilate. This brings more UV-sensitive cells closer to the surface. This exposure increases the likelihood of them getting damaged.

UV exposure can also lead to pigment changes on your skin, also known as sunspots

Continuous sun exposure leads to the breakdown of your collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm and elastic.

Not prioritizing the protection of your skin from the summer’s UV rays will lead to wrinkles, sagging, a loss of skin tone, and in extreme cases, skin cancers like melanoma.

Knowing the damage the summer sun can wreak on your skin is the first step to protecting it. With the right routine you can enjoy the summer sun while safeguarding it.

I recently filmed a detailed video where I went through the most common mistakes people make during the summer, how to avoid them, and a list of my favorite simple and easy ways I, as a plastic surgeon, give my skin maximum protection and how you can too. Check it out…
